That de-emphasis on The Organisation ran currently with a number of Watchtower articles about using ones own conscience as a guide. However, once it became apparent that use of ones conscience also required a person to think for themselves, the WTS back-pedalled on that one.
The hard line started to be re-applied, and we once again began to hear much about The Organisation. (That was when reference to "Jehovah's Visible Organisation" was introduced into the baptismal vows).

The thinking in those years 1973 - 1975 was that when "The Persecution" hit, JWs would be forced to operate in small groups, completely cut off from "The Organisation". Consequently, much emphasis was placed on ones "relationship" with Jehovah - and reliance on the conscience as a guide, rather than directives from that same "Organisation".
From about 1982 onwards though, we once more started to hear much about "The Visible Organisation".

Everybody does indeed have biases, Simon, and in evaluating the validity of any piece of writing (even one section of a piece of writing), it is absolutely critical that you know what the writer's biases were.
None of this is exactly black magic, by the way - I remember this fact being spelled out in fourth form history.

Leon Uris is amongst my favourite authors, and I have a number of his works (including The Haj) in my home library. However, you have to realise that The Haj is a work of fiction. Also, Leon Uris, being Jewish, could hardly claim to be an unbiased commentator on matters to do with the Arabs.

It was always realised that the suggested "presentations" in the Kingdom Ministry were completely irrelevant for the territory our congregation had (i.e. in Logan city, Queensland, Australia). There, angry persons were the rule rather than the exception. The cause of this anger was no mystery, either - we were covering the territory in less than a month, and people were heartily sick of us.
However, the party line was that "you don't work a territory to death, rather, you work it to life." (I fool you not!). Consequently, whatever conciliatory talk / explanations were suggestedby the WTS, the real issue was never ever mentioned. (Not that your typical Logan City resident - in his singlet and thongs,with a beer belly spilling over the top of his stubbie shorts - was ever very amenable to reasoning anyway, in this or any other matter).

i've nothing to add to my past comments on americas psychotic relationship with guns.
The only two people whom I know personally that have been shot were also themselves armed. Both were licensed to carry a 9 mm automatic, both were very proficient in using the things, yet both still ended up getting shot (in two separate incidents).
This would tend to indicate to me that carrying a firearm may not, after all, offer the level of protection that many people seem to think it does.
Maybe the Australian country singer, John Williamson, got it right in his song We must have a Flag of our Own:
- a stanza of which reads "The way to get shot is to carry a gun".
